The Bandys Trojans’ Varsity football team has lived by its running attack the first three weeks of play.

However, all good things come to an end at some point and, for Bandys, it happened to be against a winless Bunker Hill squad.

With both squads wearing his signature jersey number, the Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard boys soccer teams honored the memory of the late Alan Esperilla the best way they knew how — with their play on the field.

Heading into enemy territory is never easy, but the Trojans (3-0) were able to overcome the odds and come out unscathed in a 34-24 victory on Friday, September 6.

Wilfong and the Red Devils secure 31-6 win over Hickory due to 2nd half surge

Both the Hickory Red Tornadoes and the visiting Newton-Conover Red Devils struggled to find their footing in the first half. Nevertheless, a second half surge by the running game would tell the tale for the Red Devils en route to its second win of the season, 31-6.

The Lady Tigers’ varsity volleyball squad did it once again as it pushed its way to a 3-0 win (25-9, 25-7 and 25-13) over Bunker Hill on Thursday night.

Foard (8-0, 2-0) is currently on a tear with no signs of slowing down anytime soon led by Michelle Thao and Megan Dorsey.

An exciting and very one-sided contest occurred at Hickory High School on a warm Tuesday night, where the Hickory Red Tornadoes took on North Gaston.

It was the run-game that once again reared its head for Bandys (2-0) in the 27-7 home victory over Fred T. Foard on Friday night.

Defense sometimes can overrule the outcome of a game as was the case in the Maiden Blue Devils’ home opener against South Caldwell on Friday, August 30.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL: Foard overcomes tough battle with Lady Indians to move to 5-0; Lady Bears defeat Bandys, remain unbeaten

Although it wasn’t pretty, the Lady Tigers clamped down on St. Stephens to persevere in three sets on Tuesday and improve to 5-0 on the young season.

Foard was in for a fight early as the Lady Indians came hungry and prepared to feast on the Lady Tigers.
