2 killed in fiery crash after NC police back out of chase

Authorities have released the names of two people killed in a flaming crash minutes after police in a Charlotte suburb say they quit chasing a vehicle.

Multiple media outlets reported the crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday in Cornelius.

Police say an officer tried to stop a vehicle for speeding but the driver fled nearly collided with a second police vehicle approaching the scene.

Police say that a brief pursuit ended when officers decided to back off and turn off their sirens and lights. Officers lost sight of the vehicle, but quickly found it in flames after smashing into a tree a short distance away.

The victims have been identified as 24-year-rodf Andrew Mark Krolikowski of Huntersville and 24-year-old passenger Jason Ray Monroe of Charlotte.
