Newton-Conover High School will have a varsity football opponent to start its 2015-16 season.

The Red Devils will welcome Highland School of Technology to Gurley Stadium on Aug. 21. The two schools came to a two-year agreement on Thursday to play on the gridiron.

N-CHS Athletic Director Angelo Palozzi released a statement on Thursday morning announcing the two-game series between the Red Devils and Rams would officially take place starting with this fall.

This announcement comes on the heels of Newton-Conover being dropped from Southlake Christian Academy's varsity football schedule. The Red Devils and Eagles were originally going to play each other on Sept. 11, but Southlake cancelled the contest amid "safety precautions," according to SLCA Media Relations spokesman Chris Hunt.

"For safety precautions, our varsity football program is moving to a modified varsity/JV schedule due to a lack of student interest from the school's upper classes (juniors and seniors)," Hunt said in a statement to The O-N-E. "This fall, SouthLake will play smaller varsity football programs that match the SouthLake football's experience and number of athletes."
