Duke said Wednesday that most of the outages were in Orange and Durham counties. Service was expected to be restored early Wednesday afternoon.

Snow moved into parts of western North Carolina on Wednesday and forecasters say more winter weather is expected later this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for at least 22 counties in the western and central part of the state.

Up to 3 inches of snow is possible from Boone to Hendersonville and Brevard west to Murphy. Up to 1 inch of snow was possible around Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Lexington, Thomasville and Winston-Salem.

A second storm is expected Thursday night that could linger until Saturday morning.
