Man shot to death by police in western North Carolina

Police have shot and killed a man who fired at officers who were trying to serve an arrest warrant in Macon County.

Franklin Police Chief David Adams told reporters the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Adams says 52-year-old Clay Alan Lickteig of Hayesville.

The police chief said Lickteig was standing in the driveway of a home when two officers arrived. Adams says the suspect shouted a threat at the officers and refused to show his hands.

Adams says officers used a stun gun and Lickteig pulled a gun and fired at the officers, who returned fire.

Lickteig died at the scene. The officers were not hit by the gunfire.

The officers are on leave while the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the shooting. Their names have not been released.
