The Newton-Conover men’s soccer team advanced to today’s third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association with a 4-1 victory against Lexington Senior at Gurley Stadium on Monday, but at what cost.
The Red Devils advance to today's matchup against Charles D. Owens (16-5-1), who was a 3-0 winner on Saturday against Forest Hills. When asked what the biggest challenge for his team, N-C head coach Angelo Palozzi said keeping his team healthy and avoiding any more cards.
"Keeping them eligible, making sure we don't pick up stupid yellow cards. I don't mind in the course of play if you're getting one but one for talking or pushing back, those hurt. The past two years we've beat ourselves because of yellow cards and other issues, we've got to clean that up. I need to manage that in games coming up here but we have to do whatever it takes to get to the next round," the Red Devils coach said. "Guys will play. I sat the ones that picked up yellows (Monday). And if they pick up their second now and Xavier (Tapia) would've missed the next game and we would've been down to 10 men. That's a dangerous team, and they can score a bunch of goals real quick."
