The patrol says the driver of a Jeep was traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes of the highway in Hillsborough about 3 a.m. Sunday.

The Jeep hit a passenger car with four people, three of whom were killed instantly.

The driver of the second car was identified as 49-year-old Felicia Harris of Charlotte. The patrol said late Sunday that 6-year-old Janiece Smith from Brooklyn, N.Y., also died. The name of the third victim has not been released while relatives are notified.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to the University of North Carolina Hospital. Officials said his injuries were not life-threatening.
