Pedestrian struck, killed in Newton

A pedestrian was struck and killed on Thursday night on N.C. 10, according to officials with the Newton Police Department.
Around 7:16 p.m. Thursday, Newton Police responded to a motor vehicle accident on E. NC 10 Hwy near the intersection of Goforth Road and Neighbors Lane in Newton, according to a press release.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a pedestrian had been struck and killed by a vehicle traveling west on East NC 10.
The driver of the vehicle, Jordan Keith McCall, 17, of Wesley Chapel Road in Newton, said he struck an unknown object in the middle of the roadway, according to the release.
After coming to a stop, McCall walked to the accident scene and realized he had struck a pedestrian.
According to the release, McCall said the pedestrian was in the middle of the roadway, and he didn’t see him.
The pedestrian, Charles Patrick Wilkinson, 72, of Dun Romin Lane in Newton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
This investigation is continuing.
Other agencies assisting Newton Police on the call were Newton Fire Department, Catawba County EMS, Catawba County and Newton-Conover Rescue.
